As Winter Sets In Heating MOTs Are Essential

As temperatures begin to drop, home owners have been encouraged to make sure that their homes are prepared for the coming winter.

The engineer at HomeServe, John Hancock, stated that the greatest cause for home emergencies during the winter months is the breakdown of boilers. As such, he said it was vital that homeowners conduct an MOT of the heating in their properties, this should be completed before they need to use it in order to ensure that it is in working order.

He explained further, saying that "simple things like bleeding your radiators, checking your property for draughts and leaks, insulating pipes with lagging or newspaper and clearing your gutters can help prevent some of the most common home emergencies.”

Precautions should be taken over the time leading up to the colder months, including having boilers serviced, so that potential issues are prevented. This is especially important as this winter is expected to be particularly harsh, and a problem with heating or hot water, possibly leading to the loss of, could be inconvenient and at worse, dangerous.

Furthermore, for those considering selling their properties in the coming years, a service history of the boiler may want to be kept, as potential buyers may be concerned with knowing its status.

The expert added, "prevention, as the saying goes, is better than cure and it can save you time and money in the long run.”
