Ghost Villages Produced Through Second Home Buying

The youth population is being forced from certain rural areas as a result of the number of village properties being bought as second homes. This trend has resulted in a ‘ghost village’ phenomenon.

The spokesman for the Protect Rural England campaign has drawn attention to a new report by Halifax that detailed a property price trend in the countryside that sees the average at £27, 000 higher than its urban counterparts. This increase has slowly taken place over the past decade, and shows the importance that needs to be placed on guaranteeing affordable housing is available in rural areas. Unless this issue is seen to, many local people may not be able to afford to live in the areas where they have lived and worked their whole lives.

The spokesman explained, "A large part of the problem of why this disparity arises is because rural areas are popular tourist destinations, so what you get is a high level of second-home ownership in those areas – particularly in areas like the West Country, around national parks and on the south coast as well.”

He continued saying that there is "an awful lot of second homes pushing up the price above what the local people can afford, which leads to other negative effects such villages where all the houses are second homes and so no one is using the local pub, post office or shops."ADNFCR-1286-ID-800749640-ADNFCR
