Improvements Could Be Made To The Self-Build Sector

Kevin McCloud, the British designer, writer and presenter of Grand Designs (a property programmed aired on Channel 4), has stated that improvements need to be made to the current self-build market in the UK.

He stated that the planning regime at present is “really rather restrictive”, and that there are too many barriers in place that are preventing people from developing their own homes. Such barriers include the expense of land, the presence of a great deal of red tape, and difficulties obtaining planning permission.

These comments were made during the Grand Designs Live event at the Birmingham NEC, which saw him explaining that much could be done to make the process towards self-build developments much easier.

Some solutions he proposed included having outline planning already drafted for sites, and providing people with help to build their projects, preferably with some labour being provided on site, along with guidance and project management. Such actions could be enabled by the developer or the relevant housing association.

The expert continued, stating that even something as initial as preparing the site and digging the foundations could be a huge help to those looking to develop and build their own properties.

He continued, saying that "all of those things would make it so much easier and those are exactly the things that people are talking about right now in housing associations. These are the conversations that I am having with my development partners on schemes that we are planning in the next five years.”
