Local Councils To Take More Control Of Social Housing
A housing issues magazine has suggested that local councils will have more power over social housing when government reforms come into effect.
The coalition goverment's plans to reform the social housing system shows a "radical shift of power" to local authorities, it has been claimed.
Kate Allen, Editor of Social Housing magazine, said that councils will be given the option to define what constitutes 'homelessness' in their area. They will also have the opportunity to choose the types of tenancy that landlords will be able to offer.
She explained the government alterations to social housing will be major change, particularly the rules of two-year tenancies: "That is very important because what it suggests to me is the coalition is looking at a situation where not only are tenants given a shorter social tenancy, but they are also then encouraged to move into homeownership."
