London Council Gets Tough On Estate Agent Boards

A London council has stepped up the pressure on estate and letting agents erecting illegal 'For Sale' / 'To Let' signs.

Tower Hamlets Council has sent written notice to all estate agents in the borough, giving them seven days to take down any illegal signs.

These include signs that have been left in situ for a long period after a property has been sold or let. The notice also includes the removal of all signs that simply say ‘Let By’, ‘Managed By’ or ‘Sold By’.

Jamie Blake of Tower Hamlets Council, commented: “Residents don’t want to see their streets littered with signage boards and that’s why we’re taking action against rogue businesses that try to advertise for free."

“Once a property has been sold or let, these estate agents signs amount to nothing more than fly posting. “We want to work with agents to make sure that they remove their signs promptly."

“Tower Hamlets will soon be welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors as part of London 2012, and we want to ensure that the borough looks its best.”

The ban in Tower Hamlets follows the approach of the London boroughs of Westminster, and Kensington and Chelsea, where estate agents’ signs have already been prohibited across a large number of areas.
