New Home Targets Require A Skilled Workforce

For targets of new homes built to be met, a skilled workforce is required, one expert has indicated.

Steve Turner, Head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF) said that if the government is serious about increasing the supply of homes then qualified personnel are needed.

"If you look at house building, you have got a very challenging agenda including zero carbon homes that are going to need a skilled workforce," he added.

Mr Turner explained that the recession had resulted in a large number of redundancies and firms had to close down, meaning a reduction in the number of apprentices taken on within the construction industry. He stated that the provision of housing is a "national need" so the responsibility lies with both the building sector and the government.

The expert's comments follow a statement from the Cross-Industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force, which claimed the government should assist the construction sector to employ young apprentices to insure against a skills gap in the future.
